Widows of Hope is a Christian non denominational, non profit making local
organization working with our country's poorest widows and orphans living in
rural and urban areas in the field of social economic development and HIV/AIDS
awareness.God is is on our side so we shall not fear any thing at all.
Hear widow Ntayorwa Cendrine's
story....
In 1994 horrendous war which claimed over a million people in Rwanda; there
was not only mass genocide but a very terrible indiscriminate rape among women
and younger girls by the interahamwe militias and ex-far soldiers, hence there
was a very high rate of HIV/infection among women and girls in general.
After war, trauma, disillusionment, loneliness, unemployment, all have bred
apathy fertile ground for increased HIV transmission among widows and girls
(orphans). HIV/AIDS is a very big problem to address in Rwanda more especially
among the widows and young girls (orphans) who were sexually abused during the
1994 genocide. The government can not adequately address this problem; there are
too many rehabilitation constraints, concerted multifaceted efforts is effective
to check on these problems.
Widows of Hope is born
Therefore, we the "widows of 1994 genocide and HIV/AIDS"; after we have
realized that the government has less or nothing to help us just because of
rehabilitation constraints, we decided to start an association called "Widows of
Hope". We are a group of 150 widows ranging from age 20-45 yrs at least each
with 2-8 orphans to cater for at home.
Cottage industries for income
We depend on ourselves by making some crafts, small scale businesses like
selling tomatoes and greens along the road side at the streets however though we
are trying to earn ourselves and our orphans a living, the situation is still
worse because of economic constraints in our country.

We carry out the above mentioned activities so as to be able to pay school
fees for our orphans, pay house rent since most of our houses were either
destroyed or burn down by the interahamwe militias, etc. feeding, medical care
for both ourselves and our children and meeting other basic needs in our homes.
"this is a drop of rain in an ocean" compared to our responsibilities in our
incapability and the poor economy of our country.
Reaching out for partnership
We are therefore looking for generous and compassionate people /
organizations who may be willing to support us physically and spiritually so
that we may be able to bring up a positive change in our remaining families /
homes and as the same time serving God and the association.
